Wild and Free: The Magic of Arizona’s Salt River Horses

Some days I have to remind myself that this is real life.

Back in the Midwest, seeing a deer in the backyard felt special. Here in Arizona, we can drive a few miles and watch wild horses roaming free along the Salt River like something straight out of a movie.

Every time I see them, I cannot help but feel grateful. They’re powerful, graceful, and completely at home in a landscape that still amazes me every single day. The way they move through the desert with the mountains behind them feels almost magical.

What makes them even more special is their story. These horses have lived in the Salt River area for generations and have become part of Arizona’s history and identity. They are a reminder of the wild spirit that still exists in a world that seems to be getting busier and more crowded every day.

And did you know the herd welcomed a new foal this year named Cody? 🐴❤️ Every new baby feels like a little victory and a reminder of why protecting these horses matters so much.

It’s easy to get caught up in work, errands, and everyday life, but moments like these remind me how lucky we are. Arizona is full of beauty in the most unexpected places—from towering saguaros and desert blooms to sunsets that set the entire sky on fire. And then there are the horses… living reminders that there is still a little wildness left in this world.

If we want future generations to enjoy them too, we all have to do our part. Pack out what you take in and Leave No Trace. Stay a respectful distance away. Never feed them. Leave the desert a little better than you found it. Small acts of stewardship make a big difference.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of seeing them.
